Tyre work 5 Oct 2007

The 5th October arrived with bright sunshine in the morning and a promise of more to come.  Unfortunately this was shattered by a drenching downpour in the afternoon.  Actually the rain arrived just before the workout was meant to start!  But never fear the die hards would not give in.  Although the tyre work was out of the question (soft ground, green grass and heavy tyres don't fit well together) an indoor freestyle workout was in order, with a surprise at the end.

Henry arrived to workout and Leshec arrived to record the event.  After a short joint mobility warmup we started on a freestyle workout.  The objective of this workout was to double push press the heaviest kettlebells which we could.  For Henry that was the 40's (bulldogs) and for me it was the 48's (beasts).

I cannot remember the exact exercises and reps but it went something like this:

  • Double clean and press (24's) for 5 reps
  • Some 2 hand swings
  • Single bottoms-up cleans (24's) for 3 reps
  • Double bottoms-up cleans (24's) for 3 reps
  • Racked kickstand lunges for 8 reps each leg
  • Double bottoms-up clean and presses (24's) for 3 reps
  • Bottom pistol leg changes
  • Pistols for 5 reps each leg
  • Double clean and push press (48's and 40's) for 1 rep
  • Double snatches (24's) for 5 reps
  • Double clean and push press (48's and 40's) for 2 reps
  • Alternating double clean and snatch (32's) for 5 reps
  • Double clean and push press (48's and 40's) for 1 rep
  • Heavy one arm snatches with the 40's for 5 reps

I am sure we did a few more exercises but at this stage in the game I cannot remember.  The tempo was kept up by alternating between Henry and myself, while one works the other rests and vice versa.

BUT it wasn't over yet!  We went outside in the now light drizzle with a bucket of soapy water and a 32kg kettlebell.  After dipping our hands in the soapy water we began with some 2-hand swings.  The point was to swing until your grip gives, but when getting to 20 reps I decided that it was not slippery enough!  So for the next sets we applied neat dishwashing liquid directly to our hands.  This together with alternating swings really did the trick.  We continued in a relay fashion for about 15 minutes.  What an excellent way to work your grip.

It was fun, but I am itching to get back on the tyres again!
